Mud pressure gauges help to optimize drilling operations and enhance safety on offshore oil and gas rigs. They allow operators to observe mud pressure levels and make adjustments as needed, which is important for the safety of workers and avoidance of formation damage. Unlike piezometers, which measure the pore pressure of the ground formations surrounding the wellbore, mud pressure gauges read actual mud pressure within a drilling fluid.

Liquid pressure gauges contain a viscous substance (typically glycerin) that offers several advantages, such as vibration absorption and dampening needle oscillation to improve reading accuracy and longevity of the device. In contrast, dry gauges do not contain any liquid and are a good choice for applications where leakage cannot be tolerated.
