Most of today's pressure gauges display readings in units such as bar or psi. The dial of a gauge is usually marked with the unit of measurement, a pressure range and an accuracy standard. The accuracy standard is a percentage of full scale which tells how accurate the gauge will be within that range.

Gauges on pumps are generally filled with glycerine which helps to reduce shock and vibration forces on the instrument while also acting as a lubricant and coolant for the moving parts inside. It is recommended that gauges on pumps are periodically inspected and visually confirmed to be in good condition. Gauges should be recalibrated annually to ensure the highest levels of safety and accuracy.

The proper placement of a pressure gauge on a pump is important for optimum function. The gauge should be mounted close to the point of measurement in order to provide the most accurate reading. For example, a pressure gauge should be placed on the discharge side of the pump and connected to port N1 while a suction pressure gauge should be connected to port N2. It is recommended that a compound gauge be used which displays both positive and negative pressures on one dial.
